>> such a fundamental right of liberty. that right is already established. the only question is are you going to deprive gays and lesbians of this right because of their sex or their sexual orientation? the issue before the country is, do we have a compelling interest in strengthening and supporting the durable, enduring and uniquely complimentary and procreative union of a man and a woman? hundreds of people rallied in support of gay marriage. a series of national polls show more americans support same-sex marriage than oppose it. now, on wednesday, the supreme court will hear arguments on whether the federal government can refuse to recognize married, same-sex couples. the defensive marriage act, the supreme court's ruling is expected to come down sometime before july. a developing story. a half-hour long pursuit ends in

arrest in the east bay. the hayward police said they found a car driving erratically around 11:00 last night. police chased that car for more than 22 miles before the car crashed on 580 in oakland. three suspects are now in custody. police say it is possible the driver was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. police are now saying the suspect may be linked to a shooting on tennyson road on sunday. in that case, someone fired shots from a car that hit a father that was inside his car with his wife and child. police do not think the father was the intended target of the shooting. the father drove himself to the hospital and is expected to survive. his wife and child were not hurt. >> the coast guard will decide whether to resume the search for a missing 22-year-old man from half moon bay who vanished while swimming in the ocean. carlos, javier lopez went to roosevelt beach yesterday afternoon to play soccer and swim with some friends. a friend said lopez went into the water and then disappeared.

the coast guard spent all evening searching but did not find lopez. >> you may notice a change next time you drive up highway 1 along the peninsula. a pair of tunnels officially opens today by passing the treacherous area that's earned the nickname of devil's slide. bob redell live with the details. good morning. a few hours from now, we will have the ribbon cutting here. 11:00 a.m. of the new tunnel named after the late congressman that pushed so hard for the project. $439 million rproject that has been years in the making. get a sense of where we are located along highway one. this is the stretch of road that will connect half moon bay to pacifica. the tunnel is by passing devil's slide which for many years has caused a major headache and problems for drivers getting to and from that quarter stretch of very treacherous roadway.

two tunnels, one northbound and one southbound. 4200 feet long. 30-feet wide. a state-of-the-art technology that would be able to blow out smoke if, god forbid, there was a fire. they have the ability to override your radio in case they need to broadcast emergency information. this is a milestone for the state. the first tunnel project of its kind in roughly 50 years. the last one was the third bore of the calicot tunnel. >> they rely on highway one for commerce and commuting. this stretch of highway 1 is plagued by mudslides and rock slides. this tunnel is a solution to a long-term problem that they have been seeking.

devil's slide will be shut down after the tunnels open. caltrans will hand it over to the county. they will turn devil's slide and that area for bikers and peds. you can still go and enjoy the beautiful view without having to drive and look over your shoulder. we are well aware many have driven off that cliff and there has been a shutdown because of rock slides. the 11:00 a.m. ribbon cutting, later this morning and sometime later today, possibly early tomorrow is when these tunnels will be opening. reporting live along highway 1, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> depending on the weather, they better get it done. >> rain is on the way. christina loren, you say it is going to be nice today. good morning. the time is 6:06. the only thing we have problematic this morning is a little bit of patchy fog in the north bay.

the map we are talking about, northbound 101 at mckee. there is a crash between two cars, no major injuries. they still have to move it off the roadway. 87 still showing the limit as well as 85. 280 shows a bit of slowing coming through downtown. we are tracking all the hotspots. none so far as hot as the 101 northbound just north of 680 for the time being. the tri-valley, up to oakland where the earlier crash looks like it is moved out of the lane if not off of the freeway. not a lot of slowing headed north. slowing as you build towards oakland in the downtown area. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. all lanes are backed up. quickly building to the end of the parking lot. all lanes filled in nicely.

new video out of australia where at least two people are dead after a fishing boat carrying nearly 100 refugees capsized in the waters just north of christmas island, the island a popular destination for people seeking asylum in australia. almost 1,000 people have died at sea while attempting to reach the country. a time for a quick check of today's top stories. john kerry is in afghanistan for an unannounced visit with president hamid karzai. the u.s. is concerned karzai is jeopardizing the progress in the war with anti-american rhetoric.

it comes the same day the military is set to hand over control of the prison to the afghan government. the u.s. supreme court will hear opposition on prop 8. supporters and proponents have been camped outside the courthouse to get one of 250 seats open to the public two new tunnels will open on highway one in pacifica. by passing an area of the coastal highway known as devil's slide. a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 11:00 this morning. traffic should be flowing through the tunnels later tonight into tomorrow morning. bay area animators relieved to see their cavelike animation movie club the competition. their last movie absolutely bombed. dreamworks has been working on making movies more quickly for less money so that one movie

doesn't sink them. that movie didn't have much competition in the family movie category. they finished in first place is worth noting. they so badly need aid win at the box office. now, let's talk about the blackberry z-10. this also debuted over the weekend. it did not do nearly as well blackberry has really been counting on some sort of savior. this was supposed to be it. initial sales seem slow. anecdotally, i don't have any actual numbers. verizon will start selling the phone at the end of the month in the at&t stores now. t-mobile offering all new phones with no contract whatsoever. no contract deals have been around before but this is the first time a major cell phone service provider has gone completely no contract. wall street in a very good mood after the country of cyprus was able to prevent its own bankruptcy by grabbing the savings accounts of some of its

through thursday and friday for you with that jet just to our immediate north. however, not expecting a lot of measurable precipitation. maybe a quarter of an inch to three-quarters in the north bay. that is excessive. that's for the whole spread starting today through sunday. 70 in gilroy. 69 in santa teresa. we have a slight chance, mostly cloudy conditions, tuesday through saturday. then, sunday, the best chance for showers coming into play. that is easter sunday. we will keep you posted on this forecast. i just want to keep in mind, it is not going to be as sunny and spectacular as last week. temperatures, not shaving off too many. 67 degrees by tuesday. we are going to keep that 67 on wednesday. kind of a subtropical pattern as we get through this week. 6:17. let's check your drive. hi, mike. >> the south bay, let's give this an overview. the northbound route is looking really good. el camino starting to pick up the volume. the freeways themselves, no big

issues. 87, a little slowing. north 101, this has been the problem, because the earlier crash here, northbound side between allen roalum rock and mckee road. this is where the accident was. it looked like it is cleared through. let all the traffic back up. a burst coming out of san jose and ending up in santa clara. keep that in mind. meanwhile, we'll get back to the maps and show you some more slowing. we have your westbound 580 commute building out of livermore. slow as you are heading on 84 down through livermore over towards 680. as they merge with the folks coming down over pleasanton. nothing big. still in the upper 50s. good stuff. north 680. southbound coming out of concord, expect that as well. over here, the castro valley "y"

>> monday, march 25th. this is "today" it in the bay. good morning. it is 6:30. i'm marla tallez in for jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia cannon. we are learning more about one of the victims gunned down last week. 19-year-old sarah castromato was from the bay area. christie smith joins us live where the victim went to high school. >> reporter: her family got the terrible news that their daughter was shot and killed at the marine base at quantico, virginia. the suspected gunman, 25-year-old sergeant lopez from pacifica. he killed himself after the shooting. he was a decorated marine that served in iraq and afghanistan. there is a tribute video on youtube for the 19-year-old,

sarah castromata. she graduated with honors from liberty high school. she loved kids and volunteered with special needs kids at the high school and enlisted in the marines that same year after graduation. as a marine, she hadn't deployed. she was awarded four medals already. last thursday, she and corporal wooly were shot and killed. nbc news reports there may have been a romantic entanglement to all this. 6:31. video of people camping out in the snow outside of the supreme court in washington, d.c. ahead of hearings on two major cases on same-sex marriage. the supreme court will take on

bend and over toward the hill in fremont. let's get a look at the map. we have some slowing coming in as well. pleasanton south coming to the bottom of the screen. 84 coming out of livermore. both join up before the camera shot. that's why that build of traffic right there. 580 westbound. a couple of incidents between airway and north livermore avenue. that will cause additional spectator slowing. it does sound like the one at north livermore is on the eastbound sigh. the springtown off ramp as well. they will ditch down through livermore and expect more on the tracks as well. as we look to the south bay, we see a smooth build to the northbound. route of north 87 coming through the middle of your screen slowing through the capital expressway and the auto mall. 85, still holding steady with speed limits there. 101 recovered nicely after the earlier crash. paperwork being done. no slow down up toward the

airport for northbound 101. not so bad after the earlier slowdown. a quick look at the bay bridge tollway. all lanes slow from west grand avenue. back to you. 6:35. a teenager is fighting for his life after an overnight stabbing in richmond. this morning, the suspect who slashed him is still on the loose. investigators tell us the teen was found stabbed on marina way and metro walkway around midnight. right now, he is in critical condition at a nearby hospital. police tell us it is just too early to tell if his stabbing is gang-related. so far, investigators have not released any specific information about a possible suspect or suspects. >> 6:35 this morning. we are hearing a different side of the sex abuse scandal involving former penn state football coach, jerry sandusky. he is speaking out for himself. the "today" show spokesman independent filmmaker that interviewed sandusky in jail. he commented on the testimony of

we are expecting a verdict any time now in the appeal to the acquittal of american, amanda knox. italy's top criminal court is hearing arguments from prosecutors behind closed doors. knox and her ex-boyfriend were originally convicted of murder for the death of knox's roommate

back in 2007. that conviction was overturned in 2011. prosecutors now want that ruling overturned. the court could decide to open a new trial in the case. a southern california man is in the hospital with third-degree burns this morning after apparently lighting himself on fire. police sayed the 46-year-old man walked into a nail salon in coss s costa mesa where his estranged wife works. he doused himself in some sort of flammable liquid and lit himself on fire. he was taken to the hospital with serious burns over most of his body. >> his mother and two siblings were hurt after a display sign collapsed on top of them over the weekend. officials say the mother is still in a coma at the hospital and doesn't know her son was killed. the display sign which weighed more than 300 pounds fell from the wall at the birmingham airport on friday.

welcome back, everyone. 6:44. new this morning, the supreme court arguments on a pay for delay deal between big pharmaceutical companies and generic drug companies. federal regulators want pharmaceutical companies to stop paying generic drug makers to delay the release of cheaper versions of the brand name drugs. >> people are camping out in front of the supreme court ahead of a hearing on gay marriage. arturo santiago joins us live in what is at stake. the supreme court will hear a challenge to california's proposition 8 tomorrow and on wednesday, it will hear challenges to doma, the defensive marriage act. people have been camping out for days for a chance to witness

history. about 250 seats are available inside. justices are considering whether to strike down two laws that limit the rights of same-sex couples. the first is the challenge to california's prop 8 which defines marriage as being between one man and one woman. nine states in washington, d.c. allow same-sex marriage. 38 states ban it. the second case challenges the defensive marriage act which blocks federal recognition of gay couples in the states that they are allowed to marry. to exclude gay people from the institution of marriage is to restrict their liberty under the constitution. >> the institution of marriage and marriage laws are designed to attach mothers and fathers to each other and the children that they may create and raise in the best environment. president obama now calls doma, the defensive marriage act, unconstitutional, while house republicans are defending doma in court. athe center of tomorrow's challenge to prop 8 is a couple

47 in concord. high pressure in control for today. temperatures slightly cooler than yesterday. still, holding on to the 60s and 70s. increasing clouds this afternoon. a lot more cloud cover headed our way. we do have patchy fog in the north bay until 9:00 a.m. most of the rainfall on wednesday. another one on its he'lls slated for this weekend. overall, air temperatures aren't going to drop off that much. this is what we are thinking when it comes to the showers. very isolated and hard to pinpoint when they are going to come through. here is the time frame, between 10:00 p.m. today and tomorrow morning, a stray showers. as we head through wednesday, widespread scattered showers. wednesday does look rather active. same for early thursday. that's the deal. you want to keep your umbrella with you starting tomorrow through the end of the weeks awe will have the showers in the forecast. we still need the rain at this

pacifica. >> reporter: all is missing is the ribbon cutting at 11:00 this morning and the lantos tunnels as they are called named after the late congressman that pushed for this project, will open sometime later today. they are the tunnels that will connect half moon bay with pacifica along highway one by passing devil's slide. people going off on that treacherous part of the roadway on highway 1. in its place, two tunnels, one northbound, one southbound, 4200 feet long. 30 feet wide. state of the ard with fans inside there. let's say there was a fire. they would be able to blow out and evacuate all the smoke. they will have technology where caltrans need to interrupt your radio. they can broadcast emergency messages to you. it is state-of-the-art, $439 million project that's been years in the making.

it is a milestone for the state of california. this is the first tunnel project that the state has had in ruffle 50 years. the last one was the third bore of the calicot tunnel in the 60s. >> this is really significant. the people of the coastside communities have waited for this for years. they rely on highway 1 for commerce, commuting, quality of life. this stretch of highway one has just been plagued by mudslides, ro ro rockslides, slip-outs. this tunnel is a solution to a long-term problem that they have been seeking. >> reporter: once the lantos tunnels open, devil's slide will be shut down. the county will take over that stretch of roadway, just roughly about a quarter mile stretch. within roughly a year, they will reopen it only to bikes and peds. no more cars on that road but the view will still be there so
